Bringing people and horses together since 1983...
The Story Behind El Camino Ranch
El Camino Ranch Riding Academy has over 30 years experience in providing riding instruction in western, huntseat, basic horsemanship, showmanship, basic jumping and gymkhana. El Camino emphasizes student safety, helmets are provided and all instructors are First Aid and CPR certified. El Camino boasts a lesson string of 10 horses for all riders and disciplines, and two riding instructors to help you achieve your goals. El Camino Ranch is family owned and operated. The property was purchased by Bill Locklin in the early 1950s and served as a family farm producing oranges, tomatoes and similar produce. Bill Locklin built a sandwich shop on the corner of the property and sold his produce while pursuing his electricians’ career. He soon revolutionized outdoor lighting with his invention of the 12volt outdoor light. He started his lighting company, Loran Nightscaping (also located in Redlands CA) around the same time he met his future wife LaVesta. The couple were soon married. As Bill spent more time developing Nightscaping, the Corner Sandwich shop was converted into a horse barn in order to accommodate LaVesta’s quickly growing Arabian breeding program. In 2010 that barn was once again remodeled, and now serves as El Camino's licensed Dog Kennel.
In 1983 El Camino Ranch was established and an Arabian horse breeding facility, modeling its name after Bills “El Camino ” light fixture emerged. Over the years the five original broodmares turned into over 60 horses on the property including lesson horses, show horses, breeding stock, and customer horses. The Riding Academy was started in 1989 and has been growing ever since. Bill passed away in 2007 and LaVesta is now running Nightscaping. While still very active on the ranch, LaVesta has left the daily ranch activities in the capable hands of her son Scott, and granddaughter Vandi. El Camino provides a welcoming family atmosphere full of friends and fun. We specialize in Arabian horses, and our mission is to continue to bring people and horses together for the next 30 years.

2013 marks El Camino's 30th anniversary,
you are invited to celebrate with us on May 11th.
At El Camino Ranch the activity of riding lessons, training of Arabian horses, and Arabian mares and foals in the pasture is an everyday scenario. In the Arabian breeding barn we breed our own classic Arabian mares as well as customer mares to Dream Quest, our beautiful classic Arabian, and son of nationally famous *Ali Jamaal.
During breeding season we ship Dream Quest‘s transported semen to many Arabian breeders in this country and other countries. The Arabian Training Program for Western Pleasure, Hunter Pleasure, English Pleasure, Reining, Jumping and Driving is open to Customers who wish to have their Arabians trained, as well as training of three year olds going under saddle. Arabian performance horses are always in demand, and we market our young stock to our Customers all across the United States, and other countries. Our Riding Academy with Arabian horses and professional instructors is well known as the only Southern California riding program that provides well trained, gentle Arabian horses on which our students learn to ride. We invite you for a tour of our Arabian Discovery Farm.

The proud people behind El Camino Ranch
LaVesta Locklin
LaVesta Locklin is the founder, owner and matriarch of El Camino Ranch. She is a retired Public Health Nurse, who spent many years working at Inland Regional Center, a state mandated program for Developmentally Disabled individuals, got her Masters degree in Public Health at Loma Linda University, then she retired to find herself becoming interested in Arabian horses. She and husband, Bill, went to an Arabian Auction in Santa Ynez, Calif., which was conducted by Mike Nichols, who was making movies, and he made a splashing presentation of the horses. That was 1983, and Bill & LaVesta bought their first Arabian, GG Magnolia, a Spanish Arabian mare, who was in foal for the following year. Later that year Bill purchased 3 other Arabian mares, also in foal, from Jay and Dorothy Stream at Greengate Farm. Well, the next year El Camino Ranch had 4 beautiful fillies, so now we had 8 mares. We purchased Amoroso de Espana, a Spanish stallion, and LaVesta went to University of California at Davis that year and earned her Certificate in Advanced Equine Reproduction. While in Loma Linda, she had studied Human Genetics, and this proved useful to her in Equine Genetics, also. She was no longer retired. She was the Breeding Manager for several years until the ranch became larger.
"El Camino purchased the 11 year old Spanish stallion, *Numaa++, for our breeding program; and we started a lesson program. We then added another trainer, and later also a performance trainer. LaVesta was now supervising the entire ranch, and we hired another Breeding Manager. LaVesta is pictured with *Numaa++ in 2005, when he was 30 years old. LaVesta spent 10 years breeding National Show Horses, and during those years was President of the California National Show Horse Association, and was on the national NSHA Board of Directors. The NSHA Board presented LaVesta with a plaque for the years of 1994 to 2003 when she resigned and moved back to the Arabian industry. Arabians are the horses that El Camino has always sold to our riding students, and show students, and as our clientele grew, we renamed our Lesson Department to El Camino Ranch Riding Academy. Thus we had need for more Arabians to sell to our students. This was our focus as we moved back to Arabian breeding, showing, and training." -LaVesta Locklin Scott ReevesScott Reeves, LaVesta’s son, Is Breeding Manager here at El Camino. As a fourth generation rancher, Scotts daily tasks far exceed those traditionally given to breeding managers. Scotts responsibilities’ here at the ranch range from bandaging up the occasional wound to breeding and foaling out babies. Scott is familiar with the primary Arabian horse bloodlines. These include Spanish, Polish, Egyptian, Domestic, Crabbet, and Russian. His diligent study of bloodlines and their characteristics make him an advantage to any breeding program. He spent 6 days in Fort Collins, Colorado, in November, 2009, attending Equine Reproduction classes, including Artificial Insemination, Cooled and Frozen Semen Transport, Foaling Equine Babies, and Mare and Foal Care.
